People planning to get a tribal tattoo sometimes dig into the deeper meaning of the design and do research on the heritage and history of the design. Tribal designs go way back in history to when these designs were used to identify members belonging to the same tribe.  Tribes had symbols or designs that would make them easier to identify the members.  Some tribal members believed that their tribal symbols would bring them good fortune and had magical protective powers to keep them safe from enemies and evil. This belief still lives in present day.

Some primitive tribes, such as the Maori, would tattoo members to represent and symbolize transition from one social group to another. Tribal tattoos were part of the culture in New Zealand, Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, and Polynesian to name a few.

Some artistic individuals create their own design or have an artist friend draw up a unique design for them.  You could even have your artist do some free hand tribal work.  It’ll be one of a kind if that’s an important factor for you.
