Tattoo Flash

Tattoo flash is a tattoo design printed or drawn on paper or cardboard. It is typically displayed in tattoo shops either fastened to the walls or in books for customer to flip through. Traditionally, tattoo flash was designed and drawn by the individual artist for display in his own shop.  This is the past.  Nowadays, the internet has a vast selection of great flash, including sites that you can join for a monthly fee and have access to a great variety of choices.  Besides the flash you can buy, any piece of art that appeals to you is a possible candidate for a design choice.

There is no standard size for tattoo flash, but it is commonly found on 11x14 inch high quality paper. Tattoo flash may or may not come with an outline, also referred to as a stencil. This outline is typically printed on a separate sheet in a bold black and white format which makes it easier for the artist to work with.  They take the outlined image and make a stencil either by manually tracing it with specially inked paper or with an expensive thermal machine which saves much time. At times this is the job of the apprentice - to make the stencil or prepare it for the artist.

Some flash can be downloaded with a membership to a site. Other sites sell sets of flash that can be very expensive and are often only purchased by the shops. The quality of these sets surpasses the work found on the internet but perhaps the emphasis should be on what the artist can do with the picture of your choice.
