Permanent Makeup

Permanent makeup is a tattoo technique that is used to add a permanent color or tint to skin.  It’s primarily used in the eye area, lips and eyebrow area.  It has also been used to disguise disfigurements and scars as well as being added to the breast to color the areola area.

The inks used for permanent makeup are regulated by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). It keeps track of reports of adverse reactions and conducts research on the inks to help keep the procedure as safe as possible for consumers.  Tattoo shops have to adhere to strict local regulations.Woman with Excessive Makeup

Some people choose to get permanent makeup to save time in their daily routine.  Others choose this procedure because they have a physical affliction or condition that makes it difficult to apply their makeup.  Initially the coloring will be extra bright and vibrant just like any new tattoo. As the healing process progresses the colors and tints will settle down and every few years, touchups will probably be necessary.

Permanent tattooing has gone beyond just making life easier for people who wish to enhance their looks.  It has found a use for people that want to cover scarring and disfigurements without having to  apply a daily thick coat of makeup.  Others choose to cover scars and disfigurements with elaborate tattoos rather than using tattoo coloring and tinting to blend or cover the scarred area.  It is commonly used after breast augmentation and breast reduction.

If you are contemplating getting permanent makeup in the future, make sure you research the shop and artist first.  Ask for personal recommendations and try to find a tattoo artist that does permanent makeup on a regular basis or even better, does permanent makeup exclusively!

Remember that tattoos fade with time.  Touchups may be a necessary maintenance step.  If you decide later that you don’t want it anymore, tattoo removal is much more difficult when it comes to permanent makeup.
